RE: NEXT G2G will be hosted by Ms. Gladys Vaz on 16th June 2013

Dear Friends

I have no problem with Sunday , 16 June but I would prefer a local place rather than Lonavala – which would end up being an 6/8 hour affair

Again , we cannot be together while travelling to and fro in 3 / 4 cars

Yes Sethi.. I do wish yesterday's meet was planned in advance, and all would have received intimation. We would have had a better attendance.

I am OK about 16th June, which is a Sunday.... since it is a Sunday... just a thought... how would everyone react to meeting in Lonavala for an afternoon lunch..
Will work on the logistics , etc if everyone is ok about it.  If not, we meet for Lunch or dinner  in Mumbai. Also would lunch be better? Based on everyone's feedback will finalise the venue.
Gladys

My dear Gladys!
We missed you and HCP; AMD; CMS; CR & GKA at yesterday's G2G hosted by Sanjay.
As communicated by you during last week - we will have privilege of you hosting the next G2G on 16th June at a venue of your choice!
I request all memebrs who were not present yesterday to let me know ASAP about the suitability of 16th June.

Kindly note that 16th June Sunday is chosen insted of 15th June SAT so that traffic snarls can be overcome to some extent!
With warm regards.

Softwares for Project Planning

Kailas

As you are aware , I have asked the 7th semester students ( Computer Stream ) of LTIT to  develop the following web sites as their Project Requirements :
Ø
Two teams of, 3 students+ one faculty guide , will work on each projects
In turn , the teams will receive Guidance / supervision from Shuklendu / Nitin , when desired
Folders containing detailed FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS / SPECIFICATIONS have already been sent to
Ø  Shivanand Satose ( Faculty Member – LTIT )

Ø  Shuklendu

That means , the teams do not need to spend any time / undertake any activity in respect of “ Requirement Gathering Stage “ , during which , Client’s Functional Requirements are compiled and SPECIFICATIONS get written down , in order for “ Client Sign-Off “

But , this being a very different – and a Real-Life , project never before attempted by LTIT students , it is up to us  to lend all possible support / encouragement in order for it to become an achievement of which they can be proud
That support would start with helping them prepare a PROJECT PLAN , which lists ALL activities and estimated time ( Man hours ) to complete each of those activities
Those activities that can be carried out simultaneously ( Parallel Activities ) should be clearly marked as such
For the Sequential Activities , the order / sequence in which each need to be undertaken , should be marked as such

A few months back , you had downloaded some PERT software tool and collaborated with one of our consultants in Pune who developed such a Project PERT CHART
I suggest you send that Chart to Shivanand along with,
Ø  URL of the site from where he can download PERT tool

Ø URL from where he can download MS PROJECT tool
Some more hard-copy documents  that we can think of “ Loaning “ to Shivanand are:
Ø Functional Specifications for OES ( Order Execution System ) – booklet prepared by APPLITECH – Ahmedabad

Ø Functional Specifications for 3P web site – booklet prepared by Cyril
You will find these amongst my box files. When you find these , you may phone up Shivanand on
0-96,19,08,39,39
And enquiry whether he is available at the Institute to receive these

Hcp

CC:  Shivanand
I refer to our telecom this morning

I have already conveyed to Shuklendu , your request to meet him for drawing-up a proper Project Plan. He will be happy to help
You may phone him directly for an appointment
At the same time , I cannot help wondering that next door to you – and within L&T Group – there must be hundreds of extremely competent software professionals , who must be using some kind of Project Planning Software , day in and day out !
Why not rope-in one of those guys ?
These people have designed / developed / launched , some of the most sophisticated / data-base driven web sites in India
Just tell me if you want me to phone Mr Magapu ( L&T Infotec ) for help

Planning Development of a Web site

Shivanand

I simply typed in Google :

Step by step planning for development of a web site

Clicking on this link will take you to some interesting sites
As I have said before,
These projects are as much about acquiring the “ planning skills “ as they are for developing / hosting the web sites themselves
When these students pass out and take up a real job in any industry , it is this “ planning skill “ that will enable them to execute any project assigned to them by their bosses

RE: Softwares for Project Planning

Dear Damahe
I presume , a free trial version would work for 30 days. Thereafter , if you wish to continue using MS Project , you need to buy an official copy from Microsoft Bangalore
Official version can be quite expensive but I believe , with a proper approach , an educational institute of LTIT’s reputation should be able to get it for FREE !

I feel you should try . L&T Infotec might be able to help

Dear Ballobhai

Your tribute to Taraben was very touching

Even though , she is not around to read it , I have no doubt , all through those 56 years , she must have experienced your unspoken love for her

I have taken the liberty of sending it to other members of my family

Subject: Fwd: The poem I am sending is for Reader's Write page. My wife left us on 5th April. Please do me the favour of publishing it.
It was published today in Times Of Agra.
              WE MISS YOU
One day in the rainy days,
A woman came to my humble abode,
In the lovely guise, of a bride.
To give my home an exotic fragrance,
To give my dreams – sweetness.
Suddenly a wild wave broke over my shoulder
And drowned all my words in my heart.
She stood steadily beneath the roof,
Slowly turned, glanced at my face,
Shyly and with faltering steps,
Came near and sat by my side.
Taking her hands in mine I said –
You do not know me nor do I. you
I wonder what it could mean –
What the future has in store for us?
She said let’s try our best to build bridges
And overcome all hurdles that come in the way.
Between two beings – each to the other unknown,
Thus started a journey on the family path.
Some smiles, some pains, some joys, some sorrows!
Through them we strived with our
Limited means and guidance of the elders,
To chart a course on the journey of our lives,
And tried to build up a good family.
Yes, we had been strict,
Yes I often admonished, but you consoled them.
Yes, but we had always cared and succeeded.
We are really proud of our children’s achievements,
And more so of our grandchildren,
So well brought up and educated.
It is sad that you decided to part, company
With me in our 56th year and though
All our children were present left
Their company, without saying goodbye.
We will miss you but still hope,
You will guide us at all times, and rest in peace.

Page Writeup for Micro Blogging

Kailas

Take a look at my attempt to improve upon the sample sent by you yesterday
May be you / Rajesh can improve it further
All that I did was :

Ø Use 12 pt fonts in Verdana

Ø Increase spacing between subsequent lines and subsequent paras , to make the entire text more legible / readable

Ø Align better

Ø Left a gap on the left ( left margin )

I don’t know what other Cosmetic Improvements ( eg BOLD etc ) are possible in Notepad . You know these better
Try whatever is possible and send me an improved version of this
Also send this improved version to Shuklendu and check with him if it will do

Fictitious Subscribers and Malicious Messages in B2B and B2C

Dear Team

There are bound to be some fictitious subscribers in both the web sites
It is not possible to detect them thru software and we will not try that angle
But , when I look at the “ Detailed Subscriber Data “  tabulation in our ADMIN page , I should be able to delete those registrations which are suspect
Eg: Company Names shown as,
Ø A large company

Ø A reputed Organization

Ø Freelance person …………etc

What I am much more worried about is , legitimate / registered organizations trying to send out malicious messages / hate messages / mud-slinging messages
These must not be allowed to get blasted . Must be eliminated / deleted beforehand
The  only way out is to first MODERATE these as follows ( before dispatch ) :
Ø In ADMIN page , list all composed messages sequentially ( with names / email IDs of composer executive / company )

Ø I will look at these to satisfy myself that these are OK

Ø If found OK , I will click against each message , a APPROVED button

Ø If not found OK , there should be a simple mechanism for me to return these messages to the composer ( By clicking on his Email ID ? ) , telling him what is objectionable that he must remove and then ask him to go back to “ Compose Message “ page and re-post an “ Acceptable “ message

I realize that this may impose a considerable load and even slow down process but it is very important to guard our reputation
Even for APPROVED messages , you may consider incorporating following :
Ø LIKE / DISLIKE buttons
Ø “ Report Unethical Content “ button

Dear Shivanand

Thank you for all the arrangements made yesterday to meet the students and share with them the details of the 2 projects
Please send me the names / email Ids of the ,

Ø Each team member ( project wise )

Ø Each faculty member who will guide these teams

This will help me to communicate to all concerned with each projects ,

Ø Relevant reading / reference materials ( eg URLs of useful web sites )

Ø My own further / developing thoughts on the projects

Ø Any explanations that may be asked of me ( by students or by the guides )

Considering that the student can devote only a limited time on the projects , it is necessary that,

Ø Project is broken up into sub-projects / activities

Ø A project – plan is prepared , using either MS Project or some PERT Network software ( which can be freely downloaded from Net )

Ø Resources are allocated to completion of each activity by “ Target Completion Dates

Remember , how your teams systematically go about “ PLANNING “ the projects is as much a “ Learning Context “ as the web sites to be developed
It is also important for all participants ( including the Guides ) to remember that these are no mere theoretical projects
These are living / valuable / industry requirements which thousands are likely to use in the years to come – and appreciate , if found to solve their real-life problems
By elegantly conceiving / executing such “ Industry-Specific “ projects , your students would acquire those “ Skills “ which Industry demand and , thereby make themselves “ Employable

Granting Free Immediate Access to Internet to all LTIT students

Dear Prof Damahe

The following news report ( today’s Hindusthan Times ) will interest you
That reminded me of my visit to the Institute last week to discuss projects with 7th semester students – when some 30 students and 4  /  5 faculty members joined
After help from Agnihotri and Shivanand , only a handful of students could get access to internet – and that too , after struggling for 10 / 15 minutes !
I understand that access to internet in LTIT is regulated thru a strict Password-Control – and to some 18 persons at a time
And the students are NOT privy to this password
I checked out with both of my grand-daughters who are at different Universities in York ( UK ) re their availability of internet ( to students ) in their respective campuses
I found that ALL students have FREE / IMMEDIATE access , without any restrictions , while on the College premises
If we want LTIT to become a World-Class institute , we need to provide them with similar access
I would request you to examine how this can be done
Nowadays , it is fairly easy to block certain types of web sites from being displayed on the network
In my office , that is exactly what we have done
In case you need any help in this regard , I can depute my hardware engineer Kailas to LTIT to help out
Unless you have some other considerations in mind , of which , I am unaware ,I would strongly recommend that you circulate my email to other members of Managing Council , inviting their views , so that , we do not need to wait till the next MC meeting to take a decision
Regards

Thousands of miles away from Boston, Radhika Ghosal has learnt about circuits and electronics from  professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Ghosal, 16, a Class 11 student, signed up for a free, four-month programme offered by MIT online.
She is one of many Indians thronging Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), a distance learning initiative that allows students from across the world to access online video tutorials from the best colleges. Indians are the second largest registrants (after Americans) on two of the biggest platforms – Coursera and EdX, where universities have made lectures available for free.

On EdX, 13% of learners are Indian and 28% from the US. On Coursera it’s 8.8%, compared to 27.7% from the US. “The teachers are amazing and you can learn what you really want,” said Ghosal, who has registered for another computer science course.
While an early version was created in 2008, MOOCs are being called the future of education by experts and analysts, owing to fewer seats in colleges, high tuition costs and more young people seeking higher education.
Students sign up to add to their resumes, or simply to learn something new. Certificates of completion from the participating university are offered in some cases.
“MOOCs offer Indian students the chance to learn from the best professors in the US and Europe,” said Raj Chakrabarti, an engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), via email. “Given the limited capacity of seats at top US and Indian universities, these features enhance the competitive edge of Indian students in the global job market, and can also improve their chances of admission to top US and European colleges and graduate schools.” More than 1,00,000 Indians have signed up for courses offered by CMU.
However, to be sustainable, MOOCs need to be accepted as mainstream. “The high enrolments of Indians seems to be more due to the novelty of accessing high quality international education in India,” said Amit Garga, a senior principal at the consultancy firm Parthenon group, who has worked with education providers on online strategies. “The primary desire for tertiary education in India and other emerging markets is to secure employment. Unless local universities and employers start giving credit to MOOCs as valid alternatives to classroom based education, MOOCs are unlikely to sustain themselves among Indian students.”

FW: Sample of Hand Written Notes

Shuklendu

These write-ups are meant for our new micro-blogging page , “ Expressing Myself “ , for which I have already sent you the page write-up

These are not good examples but should serve your purpose to create and test this page

Most important things are :

Ø On his own ( without depending on Sentient ) , Kailas should be able to upload these write-ups every day , by giving each write-up , a TITLE

Ø Each of these TITLES to become a hyperlink , which Google Spider should be able to click / crawl the underlying text ( or image ) and be able to Index all the words within that page

In my handwritten notes , there are many places with diagrams / tabulations etc. These cannot be typed into a Notepad document

My idea is to SCAN these , create IMAGE files and then attach these images to that particular document. I don’t know whether Google Spider will index/store these images , along with the text

By a copy of this mail , I am requesting Kailas , to make following IMPROVEMENTS in typing :

Ø Type DATE of each note on right side top corner, in big bold characters. Date must be typed consistently as, say , 20 APR 1998

Ø Type “ TITLE ( Subject Line ) , on top center of each page  , again in big bold letters

Ø Provide a simple line border ( rectangular ) around each page content

Ø Format the paragraphs nicely , with bullet points / arrows

Ø Ensure proper / identical “ Left Alignment “  on all pages

Ø Select different font sizes for , (a) Title (b) Sub-Titles etc but consistently

Ø Provide triple-space between paragraphs , to improve readability. My emails are examples

If I have missed out anything , pl advise Kailas

In any case , thru copy of this mail , I am asking Kailas , to get attached 3 pages RE-TYPED as per above instructions and re-send to you / me for approval

Even though , the whole exercise is to get Google Spider , to be able to Click ( without login ) each and every note and index it , the notes should still be prepared attractively enough for a human visitor to want to click / read

Kailas must use some of our earlier TYPED REPORTS ( typed by Vitthal ) as BENCHMARK for the quality expected. I have given to Kailas , some of these old reports , for which , we also have Soft Copies on our server.
