 arrival of 3G

It seems that mobile service providers and even manufacturers of handsets are venturing into mobile-based job alerts in order to increase their ARPU ( average revenue per user ).

ARPUs of all MSPs are falling month after month. Competition will further hot-up with

Ø arrival of 3G
Ø Number portability

You would notice that Vodafone charge Rs.30 / pm for this service.

I presume that these handsets will need to be GPRS-enabled.

Tasklet has this advantage. It is also independent of the MSPs.

These are our advantages- but total dependence on RSS feeds is our WEAKNESS.

However, if someday we succeed in enabling thousands of small businesses to upload their vacancies on our website as an SMS , directly from their mobiles, then we would overcome this weakness !

Obviously there will be no “ structure “ to such SMS job-advts. So, we cannot create a “ Searchable Database “ from such uploaded advts.

But perhaps we can “ index “ these advts , using LUCENE.Net and then “ match “ the keywords contained with the “ Function / Skill “ to deliver matching job alerts on mobile.

Let us discuss when Rohan is free

classified service

Rohan

In yesterday’s Times Of India, on the Classifieds page, I came across one of their own advt as follows:

“ Now,SMS “ iwish < your requirement > on 5667755”  for job options anywhere in India from wherever you are, or anything else that you wish for. Only on India’s first and largest mobile

 classified service.

For example SMS

iwish Marketing Manager FMCG to 5667755  “

You may wish to check this out.

I wonder whether www.TimesJobs.com  have figured-out a method whereby 30 million Indian SMEs ( who employ 2/3 employees each and need to recruit 1 employee every year, due to

resignation / retirement / death / expansion / sacking etc ),can directly upload their vacancy on TimesJobs website as an SMS from their mobile phones .

If they have not found a way, then here is an opportunity for us !

AS far as using jobsites for recruitment is concerned, these 30 million SMEs are , in words of Clayton Christensen, “ Non-Consumers

May be they don’t have a PC / Internet connection .

May be , just to publish ONE vacancy in a year, they can’t afford to buy even a one month’s subscription of TimesJobs !

Some 500 of them did advertise in the PRINT copy of Times of India yesterday. That makes 1000 per week or 50,000 per year !

If we add-up other newspapers, this figure may go-up to , may be 500,000 . Still a small fraction of all the SME.

And, in Times print edition, each classified ( ave ) costs Rs. 5000 /

For Times , that is RS.25 Crores per year !

Dear Mr. Damahe

This is generally ok except for the following :

> Adoption of outstation students

Instead of the word " Care Taker ", use " Foster Parents "

Also mention circulation of a brief family bio-data of each student to enable Mumbai-based L& T employees to take an " informed " decision based on their own preferences.

Dear Chintan

Thank you for your email requesting job alerts only for Gujarat.

Unfortunately, for the moment, our software is not designed to sort job-alerts on the basis of location.

But you have provided a very useful “ input “ from the perspective of a jobseeker and we will certainly keep this in mind when revising our software in future.

I would appreciate if you would continue to send me such constructive “ feedback “ in future also.

Do let me know how you liked our online services. Also, do mention your experience to your friends / colleagues.

Competing against " Non-Consumption "

Dear Revathi

                       Competing against “ Non-Consumption “

Please look at Annex: A

You will rarely find the resumes on Naukri / Monster / Timesjobs, of the kinds of people listed in this Annex.

Nor will you find many job-advts targeted to this group, on these sites.

But, these “ Vocational Staff “ ( - the Annex covers barely 5% of the Vocational people ), make up 90% of the jobseekers !

They constitute, what C.K.Prahalad called, “The Bottom of the Pyramid”.

But, at present, they are

Non-Consumers of job-related info “(Clayton Christensen)

For them (to quote Christensen once again),

Job-sites are NOT the tools they employ to find job-related info

You may find some (0.0000001%) of these people advertising themselves in print media under “Situations Wanted “columns.

And, a few Corporate do advertise such requirements / vacancies in “Situations Available “columns of daily newspapers.

But,how many?

According to Google there are close to 30 Million SME in India, of which, Google claim that some 3 Million have registered at Google Places.

Surely each of these 30 Million SME employs at least 3/4 of the type of people listed at Annex. A

But

Ø  Newspapers carrying such Advts do not reach far corners of India

Ø  Newspapers have a shelf-life of one day

Ø  Against such advts, one can “Apply” only thru snail-mail

The entire process of

Ø  advertising vacancies

Ø  applying against these vacancies

is outdated / obsolete / inefficient.

It lacks

Ø  Richness  ( of content )

Ø  Reach      ( of the media )

Ø  Speed      ( of transactions )

But, with some 500 Million of the 650 Million mobile owners belonging to this category (Annex A), the right / most appropriate answer is a Tasklet.

Tasklet is what we are trying thru CustomizeResume, for ( may be ) 10 million professionals.

But, we know that

Ø  CustomizeResume is not specifically designed from scratch for a Tasklet

Ø  These 10 million professionals can access job-related info thru PC / Internet

If we aim to cater to 500 million people (of the type listed at Annex A ), then we need to design / develop an altogether new / vastly simple website, sharply focused on use of Tasklet.

Consider the fact that, for the type of people listed at Annex A , following info / data is irrelevant and therefore, not required to be captured :

Ø  IT  / NON- IT

Ø  Industry / Domain

Ø  Function / Skill ( Primary / Secondary / Tertiary )

Ø  Designation level

Ø  Keywords

Ø  Job Profile

Ø  Resume Title

Ø  Text resume elaborately listing previous jobs held / achievements etc.

Ø  Email ID

Ø  Graphs / Raw Scores / Percentile Scores

When was last time you asked for such details while hiring a maid-servant / driver / plumber?

If so, what personal info about themselves, will they supply on a new website, specifically designed for Tasklet ?

See  Annex. B

As an employer / service-consumer, if you were to hire (even for a specific contractual work), any such person, what info about them would you want before deciding?

I asked myself this question and prepared Annex.B. I could have missed out something.

For such people, their Vocational-Name / Trade-Name, tells us all that we need / care to know on most occasions!

Of course, in each vocation / trade, there are many nuances, which I have chosen to ignore, on purpose.

I want to keep their “ Registration Form “ so simple that

    >   It needs no ( or very little ) typing

Ø  It can be seen on a small screen of a mobile and can be filled-up using a Tasklet ( very important )

I have also broken it in 2 parts.

To entice such users, I have kept “ Registration – Basic “ very simple, asking for only essential data.

This basic data will

Ø  allow us to do “Match-making” with suitable / matching requirements posted by registering Employers.

( I do not envisage any “ job posting “ by employers on this new website. “ Employers Registration – Basic “will have fields where Employers can enter their “requirements”. In fact, “Employer Registration – Basic “, will be very similar to the “Jobseeker Registration “).

Ø  allow jobseekers to PULL alerts for “matched requirements” thru SMS

Ø  thru another SMS, allow jobseekers to indicate their availability against such requirements.

Ø  Allow employers to find “matched jobseekers” thru PULL SMS.

Of course, matchmaking will be better in cases where, both the jobseeker and the employer have submitted “Registration-Detailed”.

I also, do not envisage on this new website, following features :

Ø  Job-search

Ø  Resume search

These are getting replaced { thru Tasklet-based SMS } by :

Ø  Employer search ( anyone needing my service ? )

Ø  People search ( anyone who can provide me this service ? )

Practically, there will be no real need to “access “this website from a PC (- since there is neither a “Job-search “nor a “Resume-search “, and all input / output is thru mobiles ).

But we should still make it visible on a PC.

Reason:

Google spiders will no doubt, “crawl / index “it and display in search results against various search terms.

When visitors click on some such listing to access our site, they should be able to “view “the site and understand what it offers.

Then we would certainly like the visitors to see various site-related statistics / counters.

Of course, this is my broad concept. Lots of details will need to be worked out under your guidance.

But, for the moment, we must make a beginning with CustomizeResume.

In the meantime, I have already booked following URLs :

Thanks a lot for all the attached documents.

Please let us know a trial user name and password for logging into World wide jobs website. We tried rahul/rahul1234, the page gave us an error.

                            How to entice NON-USERS ?

When JAM is tried / tested / made available to our existing 1280+ registered jobseekers, we will send them an email requesting them to try-out and tell us what they think.

But, as far as millions of NON-REGISTERED jobseekers are concerned, no amount of lengthy / prosaic explanation is going to convince them.

Question is :

What comes first, " buying " or " trying " ?

We rarely " buy " anything without first " feeling " it, to satisfy ourselves that it will perform as we expect it to perform.

A website is quite like an Online Shop – not much different from a brick and mortar shop.

So, we must find a way to enable Non-Registered jobseekers to get a feel for JAM.

They will not ( of course ) be able to " Apply Online ", since they have not submitted their resumes on our site.

But, except for that last step, they should be enabled to go thru the entire process of

Ø            Sending  SMS

Ø            Pulling " some " job-advts from our database on their mobiles

Ø            Navigating thru a few job-advts

And that process must be the SAME which a registered candidate will use.

In the attached Annex. , I have tried to show how such an identical process can be experienced, even by the non-registered candidates. This is of utmost importance.

When we send out promo emails to some 300,000 jobseekers ( whose email IDs we have ), they must feel compelled to pull out their mobiles and start punching :

                             #2 / own mobile no. / #3

Namaste My Colleagues!
I hope you are enjoying my articles and contemplating on the message. The Slight Edge… it would make a difference between winning and losing.

The Slight Edge is the process itself that all winners use to achieve their goals.

A PENNY A DAY DOUBLED FOR A MONTH... If you were offered $1,000,000 (one million dollars) right now, or a penny a day, doubled each day, for one month, which would you choose? Unless you've read this illustration before, like most people, you'll probably choose the right-now million. But you'd be making the wrong choice. One penny, doubled every day for a month adds up to $10,737,418...and 24cents. Compound interest. Leverage. Doubling. Geometric growth…it all adds up-and that's YOUR SLIGHT EDGE.

With THE SLIGHT EDGE, time is on your side. What if you gave yourself five years to become twice the person you are today: to earn twice the income, have twice the personal relationships and contacts, make twice the impact on the world, and enjoy twice the quality of life? Could you do it? How would you do it?! Ask yourself honestly, "If I doubled my efforts ...if I had twice as much time...if I became twice as smart... if I worked twice as hard as I do today ...could I really become twice as productive as I am right now? No, you couldn't, and you know it. But wait! There is a way to become two, three, four, and more times as productive as you are today. THE SLIGHT EDGE.

IF YOU WERE TO IMPROVE just .003 each day- that's only 3/10 of one percent, a very Slight Edge-and you kept that up for the next five years, here's what would happen to you:

The first year, you would improve 100 percent (you would already be twice what you are today).  The second year, you would improve 200 percent. The third year, 400 percent. And the fourth, 800 percent. And by the end of year five-by simply improving 3/10 of one percent each day-you will have magnified your value, your skills, and the results you accomplished 1,600 percent. That's 22 times more than you are today.

Just 3/10 of one percent per day-and that's NOT compounded. That's just adding on 3/10 of one percent each day. That's the awesome power of The Slight Edge. If all of this is so, then why isn't everybody using The Slight Edge? We are. All the time. Everyone. The Slight Edge is always operating. It never stops. It's either working FOR you or AGAINST you. And that's up to you.

It's your choice…The Slight Edge
So, what is going to be your choice?

How JAM should work

Dear Revathi

JAM = Job Alert On Mobile

I have read the emails exchanged between you and Rohan.

I hope Rohan is well enough to talk to you in 2/3 days.

In the meantime , I attach:

Ø Annex A :    Delivering a TV-like experience

Ø Annex B :    How to convert “Non-Consumers“ into
                     “Consumers” by simplifying PULL SMS

Ø Annex C :    Typical Job-Alert page as it would appear
on CustomizeResume.com as also on the
                      mobile screen of user

Ø  Annex D :    A page on CustomizeResume.com which
                       explains the working of JAM

You may also want to look-up

This is an incomplete display of our earlier attempt to deliver JAM thru   www.World-Wide-Jobs.com

Below you will find a graphical presentation of JAM at

All of this was in 2004.

But in 2010, we must ensure that pulling job-alerts on mobile and “Applying Online “ directly from the mobile ( absolutely essential ), is as simple as using a TV Remote !

Our long term goal should be to enable users to pull job-alerts onto their TV screens and then “Apply Online” using their TV remotes. It is only a matter of time before each TV has its own IP address.

I believe TATA-SKY ( DTH ), are already having a JOB-CHANNEL ( in partnership with a job-portal ).But the job-advts that get delivered are not “ tailor-made ” for the viewer nor is there any provision to “Apply Online” using a remote. If we succeed in this, all other DTH Operators would want to partner with SiteOnMobile / CustomizeResume.

If you are in general agreement with my approach, I wonder if someone from your team could visit us for working out a Road-Map.

Feel free to phone me on ( M ) 98,67,55,08,08
