Rajeev Chandrasekharji : How about a Big Bang ?
Context :
Will the imbalance between digital content and revenue from it end?
Extract :
“We want to create a trillion dollar digital economy. Some laws are necessary for this. We have brought the Digital Data Protection Bill. After its law is made, citizens will get the right to protect their data.
Another important effort is that the existing Information Technology Act will be transformed into a new and relevant Digital India Act in the coming months. On the basis of these two efforts, the digital economy and digital ecosystem will get direction.
This is what Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in the closing session of the conference on ‘Future of Digital Media’ on Friday.
Union Minister Chandrashekhar said that the power of advertisements has increased in digital media.
Advertising revenue and monetization have created an imbalance in the entire system.
Small groups and millions of people creating digital content are being hurt by this.
He said that who will be responsible for crores of Internet users, this is also a big question.
Things like chat GPT and artificial intelligence will change digital media in many ways.
Today 800 million people in India are connected to the Internet. It is the largest Internet gathering in the world. It is possible that by 2025-26, 100 crore people in the country will be connected to the internet.
Now there is a challenge to the dominance of big conglomerates in the Internet market.
There are also concerns about security. Who will be responsible for the crores of internet users ?
Citing the example of Australia, Fletcher negotiated commercial deals with news media publishers Google and Facebook for digital media rights.
He said that after all the struggle, news media publishers in Australia today do almost 20 times more business from Google and 13 times more from Meta than before.
MY TAKE :
Dear Shri Chandrasekharji,
It is indeed very heartening to hear you talk about :
Ø Citizens will get the right to protect their data
Ø Millions of people creating digital content are being hurt by this
Ø Who will be responsible for crores of Internet users ?
What the Australian Government has managed to extract from Google ( 20 times ) and Meta ( 13 times ), benefits only 2 national and 10 state/territory daily newspapers, 35 regional dailies and 470 other regional and suburban newspapers .
On behalf of our 800 million Social Media Users, I urge you to negotiate with the BIG TECH, and get the BIG TECH to “ compensate “ these users for “ Selling “ their private / personal data and minting Billions of dollars
For your “ Negotiating Strategy “, you may want to consider my following earlier emails :
Ø SARAL ( Single Authentic
Ø Digital Dividend from Demographic Data [ 4 D ]………… …………….[ 14 Feb 2019 ]
Ø Privacy for Sale ………………………………………………………………
Ø If DEPA = Foundation , then SARAL = Superstructure ……………….[ 08 May 2022 ]
Dear Shri Chandrasekharji,
To begin with, the monthly compensation that you negotiate could be a certain percentage of the “ India Revenue “ of the BIG TECH, payable to the Indian Government, who , in turn will come out with a formula to distribute this amount amongst the users
Please convince Smt Sitharamanji to make a BIG BANG announcement ( in her Budget Speech on 01 Feb ), of a “ USER DATA COMPENSATION TAX “ ( payable by BIG TECH )
You are unlikely to come up with anything bigger for winning all the 9 forthcoming State Elections !
With regards,
Hemen Parekh
