Hello Reshmi,
You are absolutely right when you say that ONLINE ( impersonal ) conversation cannot match OFFLINE ( face to face / empathetic ) dialogue
But Shanatanu Naidu is talking about 50 million ( 500 lakh ) lonely elders needing someone to talk to / share with
Statistically , it is not inconceivable that 1 lakh ( out of those 500 lakh ), may have compulsions / constraints for a face – to – face interaction – and may opt for ONLINE talking

PS :
My grand daughter ( a professionally qualified Psycho-Therapist ), is practising in Mumbai for past 4 years.
Since beginning of COVID, her clients could not visit her consulting room, so she switched over to ONLINE ( ZOOM ) sessions ( 4 – 5 per day , each lasting one hour or more ) .
These have become very popular – not only among her OLD clients but , even among totally NEW clients whom she has never met before !
Interestingly, she gets clients , all the way from UK to Hong Kong ! All making online payments in advance, before the beginning of a therapy session
She tells me, many in her professional field, have similar experience

Listeners paid online by the hour is not something seniors/elderly will like or be able to work with. Too technical, empathy cannot be effectively transmitted over a phone line. Nor do rating options work. At least that is what I feel.
Many thanks for your feedback and idea!

Hello Reshmi,
Just read your following article in today’s Eco Times :
where you write :
“ There is no doubt that there are plenty of lonely old people out there. We have very few care home facilities for the elderly in India and even the countries where these are widespread, old people yearn for good company. There is a difference between professional staff looking after geriatrics and 'lay' people with whom they can laugh, argue, gossip and even cry, play a game, go for a walk, read a book, watch a movie or simply chill on a sofa.”
