Context :
Govt issues order to ban 54 Chinese apps / ET / 14 Feb 2022
Extract :
The union government has issued fresh orders to ban over 54 Chinese apps, terming them a threat to privacy and security of Indians, officials aware of the development told us.
New avatars: Many of these apps belong to large Chinese tech firms such as Tencent, Alibaba and gaming firm NetEase, and are “rebranded or rechristened avatars” of apps that have been banned in India since 2020.
The ministry of electronics and IT issued the latest ban order on the grounds that these apps were transferring sensitive data of Indians to servers in foreign countries such as China. |
It has also directed top app stores including Google’s Play Store to block these applications. “The 54 apps have already been blocked in India on the Play Store,” an official said. |
Meity used its powers under the Section 69a of the Information Technology Act, 2000 to enforce the order. |
224 apps banned: Since June 2020, the government has banned a total of around 224 Chinese apps.
The first round of bans covered 59 apps including popular applications such as TikTok, Shareit, WeChat, Helo, Likee, UC News, Bigo Live, UC Browser, ES File Explorer, and Mi Community. |
In November, another 43 Chinese apps were banned, including Snack Video, AliExpress and AliPay Cashier. |
In September, the government banned another 118 apps. |

Even as we go about developing / launching India-made Apps to REPLACE those Chinese Apps, locally, our goal should be to DISPLACE them, globally !

Dear Shri Prasadji,
Most of those 59 Chinese Apps you banned, are in respect of :
Ø Video –based Entertainment
Ø Social Get-together
Ø Messaging – Chatting – Status Posting …etc
I am not aware if any of these are in the nature of,
Ø Providing online “ Govt Services “ to citizen ( like UMANG )
Ø Help people get JOB-ALERTS / APPLY ONLINE from their mobiles
Ø Attend to Citizen Complaints and give feedback on progress of “ Complaint Solution
Ø Simplify Social-Economic-Political processes……..etc
Ï urge you to take a look at the ( proposed ) APPS listed below- then advise the Indian Startups re the priorities :
An App for Everything ?
Without doubt, when launched, many of these will get adopted by developing countries around the World – countries which are facing problems very similar to our own
Here is our opportunity to replace those “ Non-utilitarian Chinese Apps “, not only in India, but in 80 % of the countries of the World
With Regards,
