Extract :
Bharti Airtel's business-to-business (B2B) arm, Airtel Business, has formed a strategic partnership with smart metering and digital solutions provider, IntelliSmart [ info@intellismartinfra.in ] to power up to 20 million smart meters in the country.
Airtel said Thursday the partnership also marks its foray into high-end applications such as :
# Advance metering infrastructure
# Meter data management systems
# Cloud and analytics.
“This is the largest such deal in the smart metering space in the country. It will significantly contribute towards Airtel’s fast-growing IoT deployment across sectors,” the telco said.
The announcement comes on the back of the government of India’s ambitious vision of replacing 250 million conventional meters with smart meters in the next five years as part of the AMI initiative, in which the telco said its Internet of Things (IoT) solution aims to play a pivotal role
Airtel’s IoT proposition includes its proprietary platform the “Airtel IoT Hub” which will help the utility track and monitor these smart meters with advanced analytics while maintaining extremely high reliability augmented with telco-grade security.
“We have further strengthened our market leadership as the largest IoT enabler in the country. IoT is one of the fastest-growing business segments for Airtel Business and, with this deal, we are now strategically positioned to play a pivotal role in driving the Govt. of India’s vision of digitising 250 million conventional meter to smart meters,” said Ganesh Lakshminarayanan – CEO, Airtel Business (India).
Lakshminarayanan said as Airtel connects more devices across the country to its IoT platform, it will “exponentially grow” its present IoT market share of 55.4%
It is to be noted that the Sunil Mittal-led telco’s rivals Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea are also bullish about the growth of their IoT businesses, and in the recent past, have announced similar smart meter deployment deals.
“We are confident that the on-boarding of Airtel as a strategic partner will be a significant step towards our goal of creating strong associations to strengthen our infrastructure solution with a resilient and secure cloud-hosted cellular communication network,” said Anil Rawal – MD & CEO, IntelliSmart
Excerpt from “ Press Release / Airtel Website “ :
This marks Airtel’s foray into smart metering applications such as Head End System, Meter Data Management Systems along with Cloud and Analytics.
Housed on Airtel’s own cloud network, the IoT hub will allow enterprise users the capability to connect and manage billions of devices and applications in a highly secure and seamless fashion.

Electricity Smart Meter as a hub for Multiple Appliances
Suggest/demonstrate a solution in which the Electricity Smart Meter has the footprint to connect other utility meters and manage home appliances. The solution should be demonstrated with a minimum of three use cases.
Community energy trading platform
Design/prototype an energy exchange/aggregation platform at peer-to-peer level that allows prosumers/consumers to contribute/sell energy at an individual level. The platform should be prototyped using smart meters for data collection, renewable generation/usage monitoring device and settlement using block chain.
Dear Shri Anil Rawalji ,
[ MD & CEO – Intellismart Infra / info@
Congratulations once again – this time for your collaboration with Airtel
On an earlier occasion , I had congratulated you through my following email :
Ø Congratulations, Shri Anil Rawalji …………………………… 17 Nov 2021
In that e mail , I had detailed a proposal whereby a Smart Meter will ,
# Monitor the electricity consumption of all devices / appliances ( individual consumption data )
# Compare it with Energy Efficiency Standards , to be set by Bureau of Energy Efficiency ( BEE )
# Depending upon the deviation from BEE specified STANDARDS ( for each device ), assign carbon CREDITS /
DEBITS for each device
# Enable the concerned household to “ Trade “ its earned Carbon Credits on the Carbon Trading Exchange
Only yesterday , I have further elaborated my proposal in my following email :
==============================
BEE : the Ball is in your Court
Gist of my suggestion :
Dear Shri Abhay Bakreji ,
( Director General – BEE / dg-bee@nic.in )
This offers an unprecedented opportunity to BEE as “ Carbon Credit Administrator “
I urge you to interpret Power Ministry’s notification as follows :
# Sector ……………………………………………. 1400 Million Indian Citizen
# Non Obligate Entities……………………….. 300
# De-carbonization Project ………………… Energy Savings of Domestic Appliances / Devices
# Energy Efficiency Standards ……………. Max Electricity Consumption per unit of time used
# Methodology …………………………………….. Carbon Finance through Carbon Credits …12 Mar 2021
# Offset Mechanism ………………………. Carbon Credit Trading Scheme
# Registering of Project ……………………When DISCOM installs Smart Meter, auto-Registration on BEE portal
# Carbon Credit Certificates …………… DEMAT Carbon Credit Account ( To be delivered by BEE to Household
==============================
Dear Shri Anil Rawalji ,
On your website , I noticed that you had , earlier this year , conducted a hackathon , where two projects , closely resemble my original proposal at :
Carbon Finance through Carbon Credits …12 Mar 2021
Can we turn 250 Million Smart Meters as a device that enables those households to earn by SAVING electricity, earning CARBON CREDITS – then selling the same to others on a Carbon Trading Platform ?
I urge you to :
# Discuss the desirability / feasibility of my proposal with Airtel / Adani Electric DISCOM
# If there is a broad consensus, then approach BEE for its blessings to let you conduct a SANDBOX trial
Such a trial can be conducted in your Gurugram office.
I would be happy should you want to conduct this trial at my residence ( Andheri – Mumbai )
If successful – and supported by BEE – a bigger trial could be conducted at BEE office at R. K. Puram, New Delhi
Although those numerous Domestic Appliances in my house are not EMBEDDED with SENSORS ( to measure / transmit power consumption data over WiFI to a Smart Meter ) , I believe such a SANDBOX trial could be conducted using Smart Plugs (TP-Link Kasa / Belkin Wemo Insight / Amazon )
With regards,
Hemen Parekh
