Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Dear Dr Mukherjee :

Through DNA ( 11 sept ) , you have asked citizens ( Mumbaikars ) for suggestions re proposed cycle track along Tansa pipe line

At the outset , allow me to congratulate you on this very welcome initiative !

I request you to consider my following blog as a suggestion to extend your idea further

Please feel free to write / phone , should you need any clarifications

A Sensible Solution

Hindustan Times ( 03 Sept ) carries following news report :

“ Soon , cycle or jog on one of country’s longest tracks “

Highlights :

·         BMC will create a 39 km long cycling / jogging track along Tansa pipeline , stretching from Mulund to Antop Hill in Wadala , shortest route connecting the eastern suburbs and parts of central Mumbai

·         It will be a 10 M wide corridor on both the sides of the pipeline , and require removal of 15,000 structures along the pipeline

·         It will have 40 entry-exit points and connect 19 railway stations , seven Metro and four monorail stations

·         It will cost Rs 300 crore and it’s first phase will start in October and entire length is expected to be completed by 2019

I would say , “ Not a day too soon “ !

This idea ( already implemented in several countries ) will go a long way to reduce Mumbai’s famous traffic jams and the parking problems for its 22 lakh cars and 17 lakh motor-cycles !

While welcoming this excellent initiative , I urge BMC / Maharashtra Government to consider following suggestions :

·         Construct 40 Meter wide , light-load-carrying ( LLC ) roads over all the railway tracks in Mumbai ( may be totalling 100 Km ? ) , exclusively for
     bicycles ( not for those 17 lakh motor-cycles )

·         These “ Overhead Bicycle Tracks ( LLC = OBT ) “ could be covered with roofs made of TESLA’s Solar Roof-Tiles , to generate Solar Power .

In Gujarat , some irrigation canals have been covered by Solar Panels , in order to
generate power and reduce water-loss due to evaporation .

    With   TESLA Roof-Tiles

there is no need to install separate conventional Solar Panels

·         Besides generating Solar Power , the slanting roofs over LLCs , will prevent the train tracks below from getting flooded during heavy rains .

·         Rain-Water-Collection gutters along both sides of the roof will enable “ Rain Water Harvesting “

·         Just 2 months ago , Sai Baba Trust ( Shirdi ) announced installation of “ Electricity Generating Floor Tiles “ in its compound , which will produce electricity by people walking over it !

BMC should consider installing such floor-tiles along the entire length of OBT , which would generate FOOT POWER to augment the overhead SOLAR POWER

·         Provide  LIFTS ( to take the bicycles , up or down ) at all Entry – Exit points

·         Also provide along the LLCs , “ Bicycle Stands “ at every 1 km distance for parking “ Bicycle Taxies

“  ( BIXI  /  http://montreal.bixi.com/en  )

·         On the LLC , provide a separate LANE / TRACK ( in each direction ) for ordinary bicycles fitted with Geo-Orbital Electric Wheel , which would enable a rider to go 20 miles at a speed of 20 MPH – and 50 miles if you also pedal a little bit  !
