RE: Shall WE publish a book - L&T Story

Dear Nattu ,

As you are aware , I created on my personal site ( www.hemenparekh.in ) , a section called " L&T Stories " , where I have also uploaded contributions from a few of us

Of course , it would be a great idea , if L&T management agrees to create such a " Section " , on one of the Company web sites

But I doubt very much !

Some years back , on main web site of L&T ( at that time , may be there was only one ) , I did register as an ex-employee but did not get any acknowledgement / password , despite reminder to the Webmaster !

Warm Regards,

Hemen Parekh

Folks

It may be worthwhile exploring if L&T ebg website, can host Ex L&Tites stories. This way it need not be a printed matter rather an online publication. I thought L&T had a section of ex members previously.

This would mean there has to be a dedicated website administrator, one of us can volunteer that duty without L&T having to allocate resources.

Natarajan

Thank you, Ravi and TRV.

As of now, our group consists primarily of Switchgear.  However, I expect significant contributions from others.  e.g. Gurudatt was from Parts Department (he was a prolific contributor to Powai Pageant).  Arvind joined SCG, when it had separated from Switchgear.

TRV's title seems more apt.  Let me think it over.

You can share our intention to bring out this book with others desirous of contributing.

Many of you have spent years in L&T Infotech.  Those stories are also welcome.

Good thought;
And the way to proceed may be to divide them into sections or groups like group 1,2 etc and proceed to compile.
As we go along may be stories may appear under different reprints. However i feel this may not be necessary as we may not find enough material to compile under different groups.
Also we have to identify former employees from other groups and request them to enlarge participation.
AGAIN ON THE TOPIC,
L&T stories may be a misnomer as the stories are nothing but tit bits and observations of some of the employees ie it is not A To Z story.
Can we simply say,
"MEMOIRS OF FORMER EMPLOYEES OF L&T" ?

Hi HRS,
Not putting a spoke in the wheel of L&T Stories but had some thoughts and so asking the group here:
Are we writing L&T stories or L&T Switchgear stories?
Isnt it more like an L&T Switchgear Memories or Chronicles of the 60s / 70s.

If we need to write L&T Story then the other groups .....or whatever they were called or ECC (which was incorporated in 1944) or Caterpillar or UTMAL or L&Ts supply of the first Milk processing equipment to Amul will need a mention.
So think you need to change the name suitably.

Ravi

First of all, TRV, I liked your welcome to GCT to OUR group.  So far, I have been calling it my email group.  Now onwards, it is OUR group.

As to Girish Trivedi (he likes to be addressed as Girish), he along with RN Somai and SA Desai are the last three inclusions to OUR email group.

Yet Girish has responded favourbly to contribute to L&T Story.  I am glad.  I look forward to similar responses from others.

I am told the cover is as important as the content of a book.  I have been toying with various versions.  As of now, given below is the current version.  Depending on feedback, it may undergo a couple of changes.

PREAMBLE

After retirement in 2000, my desire to get connected with old timers who had gone out of sight but out of mind kept growing.

One such search, during the early days of ubiquitous internet lead me to PCSR, americanised as Sri Ratnam, after many failed attempts.

The other search was for Girish Trivedi.  I now come to know that he was with us only for a total of 6 years, from 1965 to 1968 and then from 1972 to 1975.  The reason for this search is that I had a few black and white photographs of ours at some picnic.

Finally, I succeeded thanks to HCP.

I sent him those photographs through email and also talked to him for 5 minutes.  Here is his reply to my email:

“Thank you !
Great job you are doing. My day is made today by a 15 minute travel to sixties and 'meeting' so many friends.”

Now that is the whole purpose of my email group.

He also told me “You and PS Krishnan – MPW’s Secretary were very helpful when I joined L&T as a Junior Engineer.”

I had received a similar compliment from someone I do not remember.

“On the day I joined L&T, you were the first person I met on C Building first floor.  I was to report to AYD.  You made me sit down in front of you, got a cup of tea for me, gave me a writing pad and a ball pen and then only allowed me to enter AYD’s cabin.”

MAIN STORY

My first book (in collaboration with KR Iyer and M Subramaniam) should be out in a month.

In our book, we touch on L&T but L&T does not hold the centre stage.  You have already read some of these articles.

Many articles which I received and circulated relate to purely L&T.  I have not included them.

But HCP picked up on this idea and made a blog-site L&T Story.  Which lead me to think today, after talking to Girish Trivedi and receiving another experience from Guha Thakurta – ex-ASW, why not publish something like

L&T Story

Memories of Small
(and Not-So-Small) People
Who made the Company

BIG

Compiled by One Small Man
HR Shenoy

Interested in participating in this project?  Please let me know.  Off hand, I know I can count on Guha, Arvind Rao, Arvind, KR Iyer, Gurudatt and Mani – who have already made a name on my email group.   (Others on the sidelines are VR Swamy and S Hariharan, who may need a kick you-know-where.) That makes it already 18 articles or 54 pages.  Another 245 pages remain to be filled up.

Of course, HCP and AYD can be counted on.  And TRV.  List can go on.

Some thoughts on the project:

1.     Each participant will contribute one to three articles.
2.     Length of each article could be 500 to 1000 words – 2 to 3 printed pages
3.     Those of you who think your writing needs editing should take the help of someone nearby.
4.     I will select the same publisher - Notion Press - easy to deal with, but the package will cost about Rs 70,000, including full editing, eBook and hardbound
5.     They will sell internationally through Amazon, Flipkart etc.
6.     My present package is Rs 47,000 and does not include full editing and hard bound book.
7.     I am not looking forward to recovering my full investment of 47k
8.     After seeing the response to the first book, I will get into publishing L&T Story; I will need people like KR Iyer to collaborate.  I will invest the money; for convenience writers will have to give me the copyright – otherwise that can turn out to be an issue.
9.     I would like to use L&T logo; someone has to interact with L&T legal department for permission.  Using the logo is optional.

Excitement is not good for me at my age, but I cannot help it.  I have a Neurologist who takes care of the resultant problems.
