Government targets full switch over of urban freight vehicles to EVs / ET / 17 Sept 2021
Extract :
Ø In a massive exercise to accelerate adoption of and create an ecosystem for electric vehicles in the country, government think-tank Niti Aayog Wedenesday launched the ‘Shoonya’ initiative which will target fully electrifying fleet vehicles in urban freight sector in the next two years.
Ø In an exclusive interaction, Niti Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant told ET, “India is at the cusp of a mobility revolution which will be shared, connected, green and the delivery sector must be the leader in this. Once, they succeed, other (market segments) will follow”, adding in the next two years, all urban delivery vehicles must go completely green.
Ø Given the rapid growth in e-commerce in the country – accelerated now by the pandemic - as many as 8 million vehicles are expected to be on-road in the urban delivery segment by 2030, shows a study available with Niti Aayog.
Ø The objective of the Shoonya initiative is,
Ø
# to faciliate faster transition to green technologies in the segment to reduce emission
# simultaneously leverage the volumes to enable establishment of a charging infrastructure and
vendor base for EVs across all other vehicle categories in the country
Ø Niti Aayog will launch a corporate branding and certification programme to recognise the industry’s efforts towards transitioning to EVs for final-mile deliveries.
Ø An online tracking platform will share the campaign’s impact through data such as :
# Vehicle kilometers electrified,
# Carbon savings,
# Criteria pollutant savings and
# other benefits from clean delivery vehicles.
Ø Kant added the government has already announced several measures to incentivise adoption of electric vehicles through FAME 2 Scheme, by extending lower excise duties and levying lower GST rate of 5% (compared to upwards of 28% on ones with internal combustion engines) on BEVs. “What we are doing is now through this integrated campaign will raise consumer awareness about the health, economic and environment benefits of electric delivery vehicles”, said he.

Dear Shri Amitabh Kantji,
Congratulations for this initiative which comes “ not a day too soon “
Whether this initiative “ delivers “ the desired results or not, will largely depend upon the DATA that the proposed “ ONLINE TRACKING PLATFORM manages to capture ( from Vehicle-mounted sensors , I suppose ) on a 24x7 dynamic basis
For a CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK of such a platform, I urge you to consider :

As far as being able to track Delivery Vehicles ( whether Electric or ICE ) using NaVIC satellite-based GPS
system is concerned , kindly refer to:
Skylo Solutions / track location and Movement in Real Time
Highlights :
“ Know where trucks are at any point with satellite navigation sensors that act as a vehicle tracking
system “
Skylo’s Hub is the equivalent of a cellular modem in size, convenience, ease of install, affordability.
We are the only company who is providing the ability to communicate seamlessly with geo satellites that are 35,000 kilometres in space. Our hardware delivers a new kind of antenna making communications seamless, a hub that can connect to 50 sensors (BYOS and they will be compliant) through wire, WiFi, or BLE, (whether stationary or moving).
Ø Because Skylo is able to leverage existing geo satellites already available worldwide, Skylo offers the world’s most affordable way to transmit data over satellite
Ø Sensor data is continuously and reliably communicating with the cloud, offering easy access for anyone, anywhere.
Ø Skylo Data Platform, which runs on mobile or desktop, offers specific, customizable dashboards that give customers the ability to ‘sense and see’ their business activities in real time in order to take action. The app is easy to download, install, and customize for immediate use in the field or in the command center
