Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

RE: CONGRTULATIONS

Dear Dr Khatua,

Many thanks for your prompt acknowledgement and informing that , in future, you plan to test your innovation to power a RFID

Even though I do not quite understand how this technological development works , I am thrilled with the possibility of your success to power a RFID

On this subject , I had some exchanges with Shri Sanjay Sarma ( of MIT ) and others , which I reproduce below , with a hope that this helps you with your efforts

Warm Regards,

Dear Mr. Parekh,

Yes, placing tags on money has certainly been considered in the past.

I think it is a matter of time before it happens.

I do agree with your idea.

Having said that, as more and more transactions become digital (credit cards, bitcoin, Adhaar card, etc.) the need for tracking cash goes down — ironically as our ability to track it increases.

Hi Hemen,

It can be brought down to about 3-5 cents with scale. Meanwhile check out a variant of the technology which is cheaper:

Following are some other links that might interest you :

Here is the paragraph which is relevant :

“ The researchers are now working on making the power delivery more efficient and transferring it over greater distances.

This technology also has the potential to improve RFID applications in other areas such as inventory control, retail analytics, and “smart” environments, allowing for longer-distance object tracking and communication, the researchers say.

Dear Hemen:

The typical power consumption of RFID is ~10 µW, and Energy density of a microcapacitor can easily go 1 mWh/cm3, which means a microsupercapacitor with 1 cm3 volumn can power the RFID for 100 h. As you said, you want some thin devices, take 100 µm thickness for example, a microsupercapacitor with 1cm2 area and 100 µm thickness can power the RFID for 1h.

Also, you don't need to continuously power the RFID, thus it is practical to do so.

Qiu

Dear Hemen Parekh,
Thanks for your email and wish. Recently, our  another work on "Egg-shell membrane" based materials for generating electricity has been published in International Journal, and featured as news in various news media. Some of the links are given below :
We have not yet performed any test for RFID, but will do so in the future work.

Subject: CONGRTULATIONS

Dear Prof Khatua :

In today’s papers , I just read about your development ( IIT scientists use onion skin to generate electricity )

Congratulations on this development which holds great promise for powering small electronic devices using electricity generated through Piezoelectric organic waste onion skins

I do hope , some day soon , this development gets commercialized

Is it possible that this can generates sufficient electricity to power a micro RFID sensor embedded in a Rs 2000 currency note ( plastic based ) , which enables its detection from some distance ?

For over a year , I have been advocating ( to Central Government ) such an arrangement , to be able to trace / track , high denomination currency notes , in order to reduce the menace of BLACK MONEY

About 6 weeks back , I came across a news item which said , government of Australia is considering embedding RFID sensors in their high denomination currency notes

With Regards,
