Dear Usha,
Thank you for your detailed reply.
We are very glad to hear about Amala and Anand's visit to Mumbai in December. We hope that we also get to meet them at Mumbai.
We are very sure you are eagerly awaiting their arrival.

We fine-tuned our India itinerary and, per the latest plan, we are scheduled to arrive in Mumbai on the evening of January 6th.
We are scheduled to leave for Pune and Pandharpur in the early morning hours on January 8th. and plan to return to Mumbai by the evening of January 10th. We plan to depart for US on January 15th.

Our proposal:
We would like to meet you at lunchtime on January 7th.
Would this be convenient for you based on your schedule?
Please let us know. Thank you.

Dear Vani & Ratnam,

Thank you for your email. Amala and family are also coming on 26th December evening and I have yet to know their plans in India, which includes Coimbatore, Chennai and Mumbai. I am glad you plan to visit Chennai as those Sabhas are excellent. Amala and Ram have been many times to these Sabhas and I went once. I also like your idea of going to religious and architectural places. I am likely to know Amala's program by end of November and will write to you. Meanwhile, 7th January evening seems to be a possible date as many visitors come during December and January. I will keep in touch with you and definitely find a suitable day. Please do not bring anything. Your visit will make me happy and we can talk about Ram and his friends like you.

With warm regards,
Usha Krishna

Dear ,
Hope you are doing well.

With the gradual influence of creeping age, we seem to be nursing issues which we never had to worry a decade earlier. These aside, we are doing as well as we can.

We plan to visit India from the middle of December, 2018 through middle of January, 2019.
We are scheduled to land in Chennai and stay there till 6h of January, 2019.
Major focus at this period at Chennai is to:
  • enjoy the legendary 'Music Season', during which time more than 25 'Sabhas' stage classical music/ dance programs (including Lec-Dem's) from 8 AM through  10 PM every day; all the famous and upcoming Artistes participate. Daily schedule of programs at each location is published ahead of time and 'Rasikas' would be seen hopping from venue to venue. Each Association boasts a well run Cafe' catering high quality Breakfast-Dinner to the connoisseurs for a price.
  • Around the beginning of 2019, we plan to embark on a 5-Day whirlwind Road trip to visit famous sites of religious/ architectural importance. One of the added highlights is visiting- FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME- my father's native village, near Thanjavur.
We plan to arrive in Mumbai on the evening of January 6th and visit Pune/ Pandharpur (Temple) from January 8 through 10.
After this, we plan to stay in Mumbai from January 11-15 and depart for SFO  on the evening of January 15th.
During this time (January 11 to 14), we would like to visit you and have Lunch or dinner or both (😊😊) with you.

Please review your schedule and advise a convenient date and time. We can travel to a place of your place.
The main purpose is to meet you in person and enjoy your company.

Also...
What would you like us to bring for you from here? We are aware that everything is available in India and you understandably have most of the needs.
It will make us happy if you could recommend something- Anything- that we can get for you.
Please let us know.
We are eagerly looking forward to our India trip and meeting you all.

Regards,
Vani & Ratnam

INDUSTRIAL DEMOCRACY

Dear Prof Shyam Sundar,

It was a pleasure reading in today’s Business Line, your article ,

“ A skewed approach to labour issues “

At one place you write :

“  Further the NITI Aayog typically completely leaves out any mention of INDUSTRIAL DEMOCRACY to meet the stated objectives, like fair wages or even minimum wages . Trade Unions perform important social and economic functions ( as an agency of collective agreements , reduction of transaction costs etc ). They constitute one of the fundamental human rights , according to the ILO “

Sir ,

You have raised a very important issue, viz, :

“ How can managements get the workers ( through their unions ), to participate in the decisions-making process of the organization to which they belong ? “

For over 8 years ( 1979 – 1987 ) when I was General Manager ( Powai Works ) of L&T , I tried to find an answer to this question , through hundreds of meetings with the Union Leaders but also through sending out communiques ( individual copies to each of 7,500 employees at Powai – in English and Marathi )

You may want to take a look at :

hemen  Parekh

PS :

Sometimes in 1977-79 , I had an opportunity to address the students of your Institute who were keen to know the difference between Management – declared , “ Lock Out “  vs  “ Suspension of Operations “

FUTURE OF E-COMMERCE ? THIS IS AROUND THE CORNER

Of late , online / offline Media are full of dozens of articles re the latest guidelines / norms issued by the Government re E -Commerce ( - although, the DRAFT E Com Policy is getting ready for last 30 months ! )

Experts on panel-discussions on TV Channels are arguing for and against the new norms

But  Mukesh Ambani  is not wasting any time reading those articles or watching those panel discussions !

He is busy re-writing the rules of the E Commerce Game by creating a Hybrid Model of E Commerce , called " F - Commerce " Call it , Future of Commerce

To know how this will look , read :

=====================================

Mukesh  has  the  last  laugh  !

A few days back , Commerce Ministry announced FDI norms / guidelines in relation to E Commerce
This was done, even as DRAFT of the new E Commerce Policy is yet to be released ( - a “ work in process “ for past 2 years )

Briefly ,  it reads :

·      E-Marketplace players cannot sell products of companies in which they hold a stake. Such an ownership or control over the inventory will render the business ( market-based model ), into an “ Inventory-based “ model

·      Inventory of a vendor will deemed to be controlled by an e-commerce marketplace entity if more than 25 % of purchases of such a vendor are from the “ marketplace entity “ or its group companies

·      E-commerce marketplaces to furnish certificate and report of statutory auditor annually to RBI confirming compliance

·      E-commerce marketplaces are allowed to support services to sellers, such as

#    WAREHOUSING

#    LOGISTICS

#    ORDER FULFILLMENT

#    CALL CENTRE

#   PAYMENT COLLECTION

·      E-Commerce companies with foreign funds have to compulsorily operate as a “ marketplace “, as FDI is allowed only in such models, and not in “ inventory-based “ ones
[  Under an “ Inventory-based “ model, companies can sell their “ own “ items , whereas in a “ marketplace “ model, they can only serve as the link between buyers and vendors  ]

·      E-commerce “ marketplace “ entity should not mandate any vendor to sell any product exclusively on its platform

=========================================================

QUESTION :
·      What is the E-Commerce “ model “ of  Reliance Retail [  RR  ]-
Is it a “ Marketplace “ model or an “ Inventory-based “ model ?

Ask Mukesh Ambani and very disarmingly , he will say :

“ Oh , ours is a “ Hybrid Model “ and therefore it is outside the purview of the guidelines / norms just announced
It makes us “ F-Commerce “ – short for FUTURE of COMMERCE  “

F-Commerce for the following reasons :

SALES :

All of your merchandize will be available for selection / ordering on our ONLINE web portal

This online presence of your merchandize will expand / extend your " reach " to thousands of consumers in your neighbourhood

You will need to only focus on OFFLINE ( across-the-counter ) sales to consumers who walk into your store

For OFFLINE sales , we will install in your stores , all the necessary Computers / POS terminals / Routers / Internet Connections / Mobile Wallet Payment systems and an end-to-end , RETAIL MANAGEMENT software

All of your OFFLINE sales data will get transferred to our Central Server

SUPPLY  :

We will deliver to your store , all merchandize on " Consignment " basis

This means , you do NOT need to pay us for what we deliver to you store !

Till sold , all goods in your store will be our " stock "

This way , you do NOT need any " Working Capital " as far as your stocks are concerned

We will also tie-up with the manufacturers

You don't need to have any interaction / dealing with the manufacturers

INVENTORY  :

On a continuous basis , our web server will keep a track of each and every item of merchandize sold from your stores

Our Server will calculate , your " Stock Movement "

Based on this data , our Server will compute / set for each item :

#   Minimum Stock Level

#   Alarm Stock Level

#   Stock Re-Order Level

#   Re-Order Quantity ( Minimum Batch Size )

Based on this logic , our Server will instruct the relevant " Merchandize Manufacturers " ( or their dealers / stockists ) , to deliver the stipulated " Re-Order Quantities " to your stores

A " Re-Order Instruction intimation " , will get delivered to your computer

Upon arrival , you will need to update the data

From time to time , our Software will also figure out your current stocks of " Extremely Slow Moving " and " Obsolete / Expired " items , and arrange for " Return Delivery " , which you will need to enter in your database

DELIVERY  :

Not only we will deliver the merchandize to your store , but we will also pick up " Ordered Items " ( for ONLINE orders only ) , from your store and deliver the same to your customers  !

Initially we will employ manual " Delivery Persons " for this but , before long , we will deploy a fleet of autonomous DRONES for this purpose

This fleet will cover " Kirana Stores " and " Online Customers " , located in pre-designated areas , covering 4 sq km ( 2 km x 2 km )

We are in talk with www.What3Words.com , to enable precise delivery through your 10th floor window  !

These drones will get their " Delivery Instructions " directly from our Web Server , for all ONLINE orders

When these drones arrive at your Store to pick up the items ( to be delivered ) , they will transfer ( Blue Tooth / NFC ) and display on your Computer screen , following data :

#  Online Order Number / time / date

#  Items covered with description / value of each

#  Customer Name / Address

#  Mode of Online Payment / Bank Details

#  Your online account CREDIT details , giving,

     ( Sales Value ) - ( Purchase Price )

" Purchase Price " of goods in your stock will be
     based on FIFO method

FINANCE  :

As explained earlier , you will have a bare minimum need for " Working Capital " , since all of your stock will be on " Consignment " basis

We will collect the " ONLINE  PAYMENTS " directly from the customers and " Credit " the same to your " online sales account " with us

Against same account , we will " Debit " the " purchase price " ( price at which you purchase the merchandize from Reliance ) of the goods sold

Our server will also take care of all GST payments and filing of GST returns

As far as OFFLINE sales is concerned , all the data captured through POS terminal will get transferred to our Central Server

MARKETING  :

Not only will we carry out all marketing for your ONLINE sales , we will help you with your OFFLINE marketing , through introduction of the following technology-enhanced features :

#   Arranging a better display of merchandize on your shelves / re-arranging of shelves

#  Introducing Augmented Reality ( AR ) for clothes / fashion goods in " Trial Rooms " for giving the customers , an experience of " touch - feel - looks "

#   Introducing Robots to answer customer inquiries

#   Eliminating " Check Out Counters " , based on " Payments through Bio-metric Recognition " of customers

#   Embedding RFID sensors in each item of merchandize and RFID readers embedded in Shopping Carts

#   Improving your window display thru rotation

#   Introducing music

#  Eventually replacing " Physical " merchandize with " Holographic Display " of merchandize on your store shelves !

===================================================

Apparently , Mukesh seems to have come up with his “ F-Commerce “ model , after reading the following :
[ source :

" E- Commerce and Foreign Direct Investment " are the " Special Theory of ECONOMY " , whereas " Commerce and Investment " are the " General Theory of ECONOMY "

The best that the Committee can recommend is adoption of the following ,
Parekh's , " 3  Laws of E-Commerce Economy " - to be incorporated as 123rd Constitutional Amendment

( with apologies to Isaac Asimov's 3 Laws of Robotics ! ) :

LAW  #  1 :

Asimov :

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Parekh :

Rules / Regulations of E-Commerce shall not come in the way of unfettered creation of SELF EMPLOYMENT

Any existing Law / Rule / Regulation that hinders a person to become Self Employed, shall be treated as ultravires

Further , any Law / Regulation of " E-Commerce / FDI " which slows down Investment ( Foreign or Local / Official or through channeling of BLACK MONEY ), shall be treated as " bad in law " and struck down

LAW  # 2

Asimov :

A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

     Parekh :

     Laws / Regulations governing " E-Commerce / FDI " shall be subservient to Laws / Regulations governing " Commerce / Investment " .

Whenever any Public Authority / Court finds conflict between the two ,  laws / regulations governing " Commerce/ Investments " , shall prevail under all circumstances , and in favor of the self employed

     LAW  #  3

     Asimov :

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

   Parekh :

Laws / Regulations of " E-Commerce / FDI " which get over-ruled under LAW # 2 , shall immediately " Self Destruct " in favor of unobstructed progress of TECHNOLOGIAL ADVANCES

Thank you for your prompt response

I also managed to locate www.InfoPill.in  , and glanced through it

From the web site , I could not make out ,

·        How an ordinary citizen can benefit from your service

·        What are those benefits

·        What buttons on your web site , do I need to click in order to derive those benefits

·        What would happen when I click those buttons

·        How much would it cost me ? One time / repeatedly ?

Eg :

At the age of 85 , I have accumulated over 100 typed pages of Medical Reports ,apart from X-ray photos / CDs for MRI / CT Scan / 2D Echo etc ( + hand written records of my BP )

Will your InfoPill app enable me to take photos of these with my Smart Phone camera ( - not every citizen has a scanner handy – the way I do ) ?

How do these “ photoed “ reports become a “ searchable database “  ?

How can this data get retrieved by ( say ) a doctor in Delhi who I may be visiting with problem of chest pain ? – although I live in Mumbai

How can that Delhi doctor find out what exact medicine was prescribed by my Mumbai family doctor when I had similar pain , the last time ? and how did I feel after taking those medicines ?

How can that Delhi doctor contact that Mumbai doctor ?

Suppose I have shifted my residence to Delhi and selected another doctor or hospital , how can my medical history be accessible to them ?

Can database ( of Medical Records ) residing on my smart phone be easily transferred to a doctor’s smart phone , so that , I can even consult him remotely ?

Can this database be uploaded on the government’s DigiLocker platform ?

If yes , can I grant explicit permissions to my Cardiologist and my hospital to be able to access it at any time ?

Deepa,

These are just a few questions that a citizen would want answered before choosing your service

There may be a similar set of questions from the doctors / hospitals , as well

What your web site urgently needs is a section on FAQ

If there are any questions, feel free to phone me ( 98,67,55,08,08 )

Wishing you luck

If , since your patent is still pending , you are unable to honestly answer some of my questions , I will understand

Hello Hemenji,
Thank you very much for your kind words and appreciation. I really admire your visionary thoughts which are evident from your blog and articles. In fact the card that I'm holding in my hand in my hand is an infinite repository of personal health info of a patient and something that can be used by different stakeholders (patients, doctors, labs, pharma, pharmacies) intuitively. It's a patent pending invention and was built with a vision to give universal health ID for each person in India. The thought to get this across in government schemes did cross our minds several times, but being a startup chasing a healthy PnL, we felt it would be slightly ambiguous for us to navigate the bureaucracy :). We are however open to explore it as the solution that we have built is at scale and ready to be deployed on any ID card issues by government.

Wishing you happy new year in advance!

Somehow , I could find your web site for additional info

But TOI write up reads :

“ InfoPill , a device that automates provision of information about patients as soon as they walk into the doctor’s clinic . Shah says 2,000 doctors use them “

Congratulations on this remarkable innovation which has the potential to revolutionize healthcare in India

Sometime back , in one of my blogs on Ayushman Bharat ( NHS ) , I wrote :

EaEach eligible family member to be issued a “ Ayushman Card “ ( linked to Aadhar ID )

Ayushman card will have inbuilt memory capacity to store that person’s health data from “ Cradle to Grave “ ( Privacy advocate need not worry ! )

All the Health Data of all 50 crore beneficiaries to be stored on a Central Server for BIG DATA analysis , in order to “ Predict “ WHO might become susceptible to WHICH ailment and WHEN

As an alternative , a GPS enabled / NFC capable Smart Phone pre-loaded with AYUSHMAN MOBILE APP , could be considered to replace the card

PROCESS  :

·         Beneficiary getting AYUSHMAN Card after authentication from nearest Health Centre

·         Beneficiary approaching any Registered Medical Practitioner ( RMP ) for ailment

·         RMP entering Diagnosis / Prescription in Mobile App ( or in Card using Card Reader )

·         Beneficiary presenting card at the premises of delivery of Medicines / Devices / Services as prescribed by RMP

·         Person delivering medicines / service , entering the details in Card and delivering service ( including no of items / unit price / GST etc )

·         Beneficiary “ sign off “ ( in Card ) for having received medicine / service

·         Person delivering service ( or medicine ) , uploading data on Central Server of Health Ministry

·         Health Ministry updating PATIENT HISTORY in the database and effecting DIGITAL PAYMENT to person delivering medicine / service [ DBT ]

·         There will be NO CASH TRANSFER to a beneficiary ( to avoid fraud / fake cases )
