Shuklendu / Nitin
They say , calamities arrive in battalion !
First it was blocking of a/c by InMobi
Next it was withdrawal by HP Labs
And now it is hard-disc crash !
Let us turn these setbacks to into “ Opportunities “
Ø InMobi
Hopefully , they will unblock our a/c this week. But if they do not , Shuklendu may want to examine possible integration of our apps with Ad Networks of Google / Yahoo / AdMob / Komli etc
Ø HP Labs
Let us redevelop My Jobs along the lines of Resume Blaster – with the same revenue-sharing arrangement as we have agreed upon for Resume Blaster
And introduce several improvements ( including Cookie ) which we wanted . Also make it “ light “
Ø Hard-Disc Crash
Currently , our server has 2* 500 gb hard discs
Kailas recommends 1 TB and will today , try to find price / delivery from DELL . Order to be placed after
consulting Shuklendu
In the meantime , can we consider hosting the web site on that
surplus server ? In the past , we have several times talked of using this
server for splitting the processes. Shuklendu may advise Kailas re this
This would be a temporary solution to get the site up-and-running by
TODAY evening
For long-term solution , pl examine :
·
Daily back-up on the CLOUD . I believe several web sites offer
such dynamic service . Of course , this will still NOT solve the problem of any
future crash of hard-disc
·
Moving our site totally onto CLOUD. Once again , I believe ,
Google / Amazon / MS etc offer such services. Once , Shuklendu mentioned that
there are even Indian Cloud-Service providers
Questions to be asked in this case , are :
# Will this ( total shifting to Cloud ) be cheaper ( as compared
to our current / own cost of self-hosting )?
Kailas to tell Shuklendu what exactly does it cost us
today to host our site by ourselves and what is the average monthly
data-transfer today
Based on this Shuklendu could figure out what will be the
monthly charge of hosting on the Cloud
Of Course , the amount of data-transfer will sharply go up once
hundreds or thousands of users start emailing their resumes , thru My Jobs and
Resume Blaster. This may be difficult to estimate but future data-transfer
monthly charges ( by Cloud service providers ) can be easily computed based on
some “ guesses “ of future data-transfer amounts
Immediate “ cheapness “ is not an issue . We must look at long-term cheapness of
Cloud Vs Self-hosting
Of course , Cloud has certain other advantages ( over self-hosting
) such as :
·
Rapid scalability to cope-up with any sudden future increase in
data-transfer. Additional capacities can be added dynamically within hours , to
cope with increased demand ( in slabs )
·
Hopefully , no more “ Crashing “ of hard-discs and stopping of web
site. When daily traffic/ visits go up to thousands , this factor becomes very
critical. But , we may still be a few months away from such a situation
The most important thing right now is to get our site UP
and RUNNING
today , since there is hardly
any traffic currentlyAfter talking over with Kailas , I would request Shuklendu to phone me and apprise me of the actions planned
